Movember: Moustache and prostate cancer month

Movember: Moustache and prostate cancer month

What is Movember

Movember is an annual campaign in November to raise awareness about men's health, focusing on prostate and testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. During this month, men grow moustaches, a symbol that attracts attention and facilitates conversations about these issues. The moustache, in addition to being visually striking, is an icon of masculinity, making it a perfect fit for the campaign. Born in 2003 in Australia, Movember comes from the combination of “moustache” and “November” and aims to reduce preventable deaths in men worldwide by promoting prevention and early detection of disease.

Movember and prostate cancer, one of the movement's main fights

Movember focuses much of its mission on the fight against prostate cancer, one of the most common diseases in men and one of the leading causes of male death. In 2020, in Spain, there were around 34,000 cases of prostate cancer and approximately 6,000 deaths from prostate cancer. Similarly, worldwide, prostate cancer is positioned as the leading cause of death in men. second most common cancer in men and the fifth leading cause of death in the world. This means 1,276,106 cases of this tumour per year. These data indicate that, if this trend continues, the number of cases will increase to 40% by 2040. This cancer can develop without clear initial symptoms, which means that prevention and early detection are essential.

The campaign encourages men to have a sexual intercourse regular PSA tests (prostate-specific antigen) from the age of 50, or 45 if they have a family history, as these checks can make a big difference to survival.

A brief history of Movember

Since 2003, the charitable foundation Movember has funded more than 1,250 projects focused on men's health, challenging the status quo and changing the way health services support men. Its main goal is to reduce premature deaths in men by 25% by 2030. The statistics are alarming: men die, on average, six years earlier than women, and suicide rates in men are much higher, accounting for three out of four suicide deaths globally.

The Movember Foundation also addresses gender inequality in health, an issue that has been ignored by many policy makers. Movember invites men and women, businesses and governments to unite in the fight to reduce this inequality and improve men's health globally.

Movember not only works for men, but promotes a collective effort to ensure that future generations of men enjoy better health.
