Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection that can affect different parts of the body, including the genitals, rectum and throat. Some of the most common symptoms that can occur in the different areas affected by the infection are described below:
- Genitalia: In women, there may be abnormal vaginal discharge, pain or burning with urination, pain during intercourse, or vaginal bleeding outside the menstrual period. In men, there may be discharge from the penis, pain or burning during urination, and pain or swelling in the testicles.
- Rectum: there may be rectal discharge, pain, itching, bleeding, rectal tenesmus (sensation of having to defecate) and pain during bowel movements.
- Throat: there may be a sore throat, redness and pain when swallowing.
It is important to note that some of these symptoms may be caused by other infections or medical conditions, and that gonorrhoea can also occur asymptomatically.
